What You Might Need to Know About Home Modifications:

What types of Home Modifications does Two Sense Therapy specialise in?

Two Sense Therapy specialises in complex home modifications, however often works with minor modifications as well. If you are in need of assistance making your home more accessible our team is able to complete an in-home visit to assess our requirements and bring them to life. Most commonly we work with bathroom modifications and home access (ramps, accessing areas of your home, ease of living in your space, etc) for our participants.

What is the process of Home Modifications?

Step one: We work with you and your team to identify the barriers that you are facing in your living space

Step Two: We write a report that will be submitted to the NDIS outlining why these modifications are required and how this will improve your everyday living environment. We source builders and gather quotes to provide to the NDIS.

Step three: Once approved by the NDIS we work with you and a builder to implement the required changes to your living space.

What types of NDIS Home Modifications are available?

Minor Home Modifications: There are two types of minor modifications that NDIS outline through either Category A and Category B. Category A is modifications that cost under $10,000 this category can include work such as making doorways wider that do not hold other parts of the house. Category B minor home modifications cost between $10,000 and $20,000 and can involve minor modifications for example to the bathroom floor.

Complex Modifications: This category of modifications is usually over $20,000 and involves changing one or more areas of the home to ensure your safety and ease of movement around your home. NDIS identify that you may need complex modifications if you:

  • “have safety concerns or difficulty moving around your home

  • have trouble with personal care, like using your shower

  • can’t use the rooms you need to use in your home

  • have difficulty pursuing your goals in your home because of your disability

  • need changes to your home so your carers can support you safely.”

Here are a few additional items to keep in mind:

Within the NDIS Scheme, as with any other building work, there are laws and regulations that Occupational Therapists and builders must adhere to when undertaking home modifications. Our Occupational Therapists will only recommend necessary changes to the home and may not be able to fund your exact preferences of items eg. specific bathroom tile choices. The NDIA will only fund standard modifications and fittings however If you do have preferred items you are able to discuss this with your assigned OT and see if they are able to be funded. If the specific item that you are looking for is not deemed standard you are able to opt to pay out of pocket for the cost differences in product type as long as it achieves the same or equivalent outcomes.
